Will my policy cover others driving my car?
Generally, your insurance policy follows your car. This means that anyone that has permission to drive your car and has not been explicitly excluded by your insurance company will be covered when they drive your car. Because insurance companies must pay for claims caused by others driving your car, they typically insist that every driver in your household be listed (and therefore charged for) on your policy. Two exceptions to this are:
- You prove that a driver in your household has their own insurance policy. Sending your car insurance company a copy of the other driver's policy is usually all that is required.
- You submit a form to your insurance company excluding a specific driver from driving your car (typically called a Named Driver Exclusion form).
